Website Updates Log

Just a log of what I've changed on the site. Interesting if you are me or are interested in how this site works.

  1. 2004-04-08
    1. Wrote a script to automatically email me and send my phone a message whenever a script-error happens on the site. But its smart enough to not send emails if I am logged in through SSH debugging the culpret. Cool huh.
    2. Got some more Presets for Custom themes.
    3. Added a new element to the Custom theme, the Page Header BG Color. Wanted this so that the now Windows Update preset will look more acurate.
    4. Registered a new domain name that will forward to here. Its called ... Drumroll... "ResourceFork.com" HAH! didn't see that one commin did ya! This is the domain I origonally wanted but was owned purely out of spite by an evil moniac le mad man. So it was out of my grasp... Until now!

    1. Added/wrote a script to send a pseudo SMS message to my cell phone from the site here.
    2. changed the search url in the word of the day script from Dictionary.com to Google's "Define" function. If the WOTD is more than one word it will still try and define it, but run a search at the same time.
    3. Made public the Custom Theme, and the Custom Theme Setup page. Hope everyone thinks this is as totally sweet as I do. I'm really proud of myself for coming up with it. and have been wanting to code it for nearly a year now.
    4. Fixed Sendmail, and thus things like UD and SS emails work now, not to mention any DaoLAN stuff.
    5. Repaired Apache 2.0 and 1.3 conflict at boot-up. 1.3 still wanted to be king, but i slapped it and it obeyed. Now 2.0 will rule. There's little visual difference, but the difference is the key.
    6. Paid for the new webserver which should be coming soon. It will boost the server's speed by 17 MHz, but allow me to get away from the 8 GB limitation imposed on the mid-world machines imposed by Apple.

    1. Brak: I redid the fundamentals of TRF again
      1. Brak: now there is no main container table any more
      2. Brak: menu and head is done with floating layers
Skibo: and yet, it looks no different
        Brak: exactly
        Brak: that was my goal
        Skibo: you achieved it
      3. Brak: the point of switching is that now things can draw as they are loaded without having to wait for the closing tag of the cell
        Skibo: good
Brak: the reason people don't like tables, is that all the contents of each cell must be rendered before it can be drawen to the screen
Skibo: and with a huge site such as yours, that could taek a while
Brak: that was happening with the news on the front page lately
    2. Brak: also the inline frame is gone
Brak: and that scroller is done with CSS
      Skibo: for ed. notes?
      Brak: yep
      Skibo: cool
    3. Brak: also the theme picker cookie is now set with javascript instead of a CGI script. less executions means less CPU time which means faster user exp
      Skibo: nice
Brak: so lota changes but none noticible ;) just faster load times
      Skibo: always welcome
    4. Brak: oh and I unified the javascript so now only one script is used for both the theme and news rating :D
      Skibo: cool

    1. Updated the server to Apache 2.0.40
      1. moved the Theme Picker cgi refrence to the menu include
      2. added a stupid little date thing to the menu ot the bottom that is controlled by SSI to verify its actually working (nested SSI statments, the menu is added via an include with SSI)
      3. Altered the autogenerated file lists so now they look good instead of bad.
    2. Moved the News Rating Picker to the right side of the main news page te balance out the loss of the Theme Picker
    3. Added menu table data to the theme picker so it would dynamically dissappear on the CGI pages. This will remain the same until I can asertain a way to execute a CGI from within a CGI by only using an <!--#Exec statement.
    4. Tore out the main table container on the front page and replaced it with 2 DIV tags with relative positioning (hard coded). The result is faster page load times because the browser doesn't have to wait fro the table to finish loading before i t can draw it to the screen.
    5. Fixed up the Logo class for each theme and reworked that part of the menu so that now all logos properly appear (mostly)
  5. Lately, Don't remember the time.
    1. Added the GeekLog theme for... you guessed it... geeks
    2. Converted the Editors notes to an inline frame, but retained functionality with ancient browsers.
    3. Converted the webcam page to a CGI
    4. Updated the OS themes to recent actual builds on the respectiev OS'
    5. Site became fully HTML 4.01 compliant (its lot like it had far to go tho)

To Do list

  1. Really Important
    1. NO PROBLEMOS!
  2. Sorta Important
    1. Get a CGI script to be able to execute another CGI script, Likely to use eval() and `perl whatever` to run and save values.
  3. Not Important
    1. Can't think of any.
